Kampong Speu Faces Labor Shortage

Kampong Speu: The governor of Kampong Speu province, Vy Samnang has expressed that the province is currently experiencing shortage of labor in factories. It covers the factories for textile, garment, footwear and bag. He says that just last month, over 8,000 workers were needed by the province to answer the demand for factories and still more investors are coming. That means more laborers are needed in the province.

Governor Samnang says, “The number of factories in the province are a lot more than the number of workers present in Kampong Speu. So, we need more workers. The garment factories are calling for help to find more workers for them.” He has invited people from the neighboring provinces such as Kampong Chhnang, Kandal, Takeo and Kampot who want to work in textile and garment industry to come and work in Kampong Speu.

According to the governor, there are currently 333 factories in Kampong Speu and more investors are still even looking for construction sites or areas that can cater more workers. He says, of the total number of factories at present, 153 serve the garment and footwear sector. He has added that the labor force in the province is about 150,000 of which 130,000 are working in the garment sector. Kampong Speu’s total population is over 880,000.
